Item TypephotographDatec1930sContent‘Labour of Love: The History of the Nurses Association in Queensland 1860-1950’ by Glenda Strachan (1996 Allen & Unwin) give the following info about Elizabeth Harrison:
“Elizabeth Harrison, nee Beames, trained as a nurse in Townsville Hospital from 1900 to 1903. She married and worked as a private nurse in Ravenswood in north Queensland until 1914, when, widowed with three children, she went to Brisbane and trained for six months at the Lady Bowen Hospital to become a qualified midwifery nurse. At this time she became a member of the ATNA (Australasian Trained Nurses Association). She returned to North Queensland and ran a private hospital, Mt Alma, in Charters Towers.”

Elizabeth worked under Dr Huxtable at Mt Alma until it closed in 1932. She then opened Mt Alma Private Hospital at 183 Mosman St which ran until 1937.
This building is no longer there, but the lower section of stone fence and stairs remains.
