The railway was first put through to Charters Towers in the early 1880s, a vital link to Townsville, and later to the western towns.
The Charters Towers Railway Station was situated on Gill Street in what was then Queenton, halfway between Charters Towers and Millchester.
The old station was demolished in the 1980s and replaced with the current buildings.
