An Ambulance Brigade was first formed in Charters Towers in the 1890s, and quickly became an essential service. A dedicated Ambulance Station was built in 1900, designed by Walter Hunt and located in Gill Street.
The Ambulance operated out of this building for 96 years, through changes such as horse-drawn ambulance vehicles, to early motor cars.
A new station was built in 1996 next door to the old one, and the old building was converted to an Ambulance Museum in 2003 and still open today.
