‘June 19th, 1984 was an historic day in Charters Towers - it was the last time the city’s local newspaper, “The Northern Miner”, was printed on the old Duplex brand flatbed press, believed to be the second of its kind operating in Queensland.
This photo shows the “Miner” production staff rolling off that historic edition of the paper. The “Miner” is now printed through an offset method at Townsville. The paper proudly parades the fact that it is one of the oldest continuing newspapers in Queensland.
It was established the year Charters Towers came into being, 1872.’

(Only staff member identified in photo is John Hamilton, at the rear of the photo)

Note : It is thought that the press was buried under the floor at The Northern Miner premises (Gill Street) work area, as it was too large to shift out.
