ANZAC Day is commemorated in Charters Towers every year with a dawn service held at the War Memorial Cemetery at the Lynd Highway Cemetery, followed by a street march starting at the intersection of Mosman and Mary Streets, and concluding with a ceremony at the Cenotaph in Gill Street. The local RSL then holds a luncheon and games of two-up.
The earliest ANZAC Day gatherings in Charters Towers took the form of a Memorial Luncheon, held at the Town Hall for current and returned servicemen around 1916.
Every ANZAC Day we remember the 8000 armed personnel who lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign, and the 60 000 Australians who died in World War One, almost 40 000 who died in World War Two and every soldier, sailor, air force officer, medical and support staff and civilians who have lost their lives in service and during conflicts since then.
We remember the people of the Charters Towers region - friends, families and ancestors - who served their country and those who continue to serve today, acknowledging those who gave their lives, and those who returned to live with the burden of the unimaginable.
