The building now known as City Hall was originally constructed for the Queensland National Bank in 1891 at the height of the Charters Towers Goldfield's prosperity. Almost all of the original features are preserved today, from the tiled foyer, timber counters and bank manager's office with glass inset doors, and two large strong-rooms to store the bank takings and gold produced in the mines. As the goldfield declined, the banks downsized and eventually closed in the 1940s. It was eventually sold to the City Council, after they had outgrown their old Town Hall. They relocated to the old Qld National Bank building in 1948 and it became City Hall. In 2008 the Charters Towers City Council amalgamated with the Dalrymple Shire Council to form the Charters Towers Regional Council, and the larger workforce and expanded services were relocated once more to the new Dalrymple Shire Council building further along Mosman Street.
