Gill Street
Gill Street is one of the two main streets of Charters Towers along with Mosman Street and has been the focus of business and social life since the earliest days of the town.
It stretches from Mosman Street to the railway crossing, where it becomes Millchester Road as it previously led to the township of Millchester (now suburb).
It was named after Francis Gill, assistant gold commissioner at Charters Towers from 1873 to 1874. However, owner and editor of the local newspaper The Northern Miner, Thadeus O'Kane, had a personal grudge against Gill and therefore refused to refer to the main street as Gill Street, and called it 'Miner Street' for most of his long career at the newspaper.
Gill Street still remains the busy centre of Charters Towers and retains many of its historical buildings, as well as one of the longest continual covered footpaths in Queensland under the awnings of the historical shops and businesses in the CBD.
