Ravenswood is another historic gold mining town, situated 89km east of Charters Towers and falls within the Charters Towers Regional Council area. The traditional owners are the Birriah people and Gudjal people.

The town had its beginnings in 1868 when Marmaduke Curr, a pastoralist who had claimed the land in the area, noticed flecks of alluvial gold in what became Elphinstone Creek while mustering his cattle. 

A gold rush followed and within a few years there were over 48 hotels and dozens of shops, as well as schools, churches, Courthouse, Ambulance centre, Council offices and School of Arts. 

As the gold boom ended, the town gradually shrank. Only two hotels are left standing - the Imperial and the Railway Hotels. The population dropped to around 255 today. 

However, gold mining is still underway in Ravenswood. There is the Mt Wright underground mine, and the Ravenswood Gold opencut mine which almost surrounds the southern side of the old town. As the opencut has expanded it has almost swallowed the town site, and has required the relocation of some buildings, including the State School. 

A few of the grand old historic buildings remain and tourists enjoy the feeling of stepping back into an old 'wild west' town that Ravenswood gives.
