“Elizabeth Harrison, nee Beames, trained as a nurse in Townsville Hospital from 1900 to 1903. She married and worked as a private nurse in Ravenswood in north Queensland until 1914, when, widowed with three children, she went to Brisbane and trained for six months at the Lady Bowen Hospital to become a qualified midwifery nurse. At this time she became a member of the ATNA (Australasian Trained Nurses Association). She returned to North Queensland and ran a private hospital, Mt Alma, in Charters Towers.”

Elizabeth’s eldest son Walter Leslie Norwood Harrison, born 1904, grew up in Ravenswood until he and his brother attended All Souls School as some of its earliest students. Walter became the first Head Boy, and is depicted in the stained glass window in Halse Hall, with principal Halse.
Walter was sponsored by an unknown person to attend the University of Qld and later won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University. He was awarded first class honours in Law and later became Garrick Professor at University of Qld.
