“Left (stick in hand) is the late Billy Wellington, with members of the W.P.O. at Charters Towers, who were members of the committee that elected
Andy Dawson, the ‘first Labour Prime Minister in the world’.
The late W.J. (Billy) Wellington) was at one time State Member for Charters Towers, being elected in the famous 1915 sweep which brought the T.J. Ryan Ministry into office.
Six Tory Ministers were defeated in that election. Included among those who came in with Ryan were T. Dunstan, D. Fledson, J. Stopford, T.L. Jones,
W.J. Forgan Smith and later G. Pollack and Frank Forde, the latter to become a distinguished Federal Cabinet Minister, and eventually Prime Minister for a short period.
Billy Wellington was one of the most familiar figures in Charters Towers, having been a miner, and the secretary of the miners’ organisation.
He had an artificial leg.”
