Item TypephotographDate1985ContentEngadin: The Tait family home and gardens in Rutherford Street. This had been owned by the Day Dawn Consolidated Mining Company and occupied by its financial director Joseph Elliott. He fought a very long legal battle to retain its use after the mining company folded. It was subsequently rented out to a Swiss music teacher who named the house in honour of a valley he had once lived in Switzerland. Dr Alec Tait, dentist, purchased the house in 1933. He married Ethel Allom a daughter of Barlow Allom and son of the artist William Allom. They had three boys including Fergus Tait. Fergus believes the house was built in 1884.
